Both his experience as a veterinarian, travelling the rough roads of Scotland, and later Belfast, and observing his young son struggle to ride his tricycle on the cobbled streets, set his inventive mind thinking. Ultimately, the outcome was the invention of the world’s first air-filled, pneumatic tyre, an innovation that has persisted to this day. The production of these shock-absorbing tyres began in Dublin in 1889, and Dunlop tyres have been popular ever since. These days, the business is operated by Goodyear, with production plants all over the globe. However, Dunlop tyres are no longer produced in the UK, with the last British production factory in Birmingham closing in 2014.
