The Firestone company was founded in 1900 and originally produced solid rubber tires for fire apparatus. However, this was not the reasoning behind the name Firestone, which was actually named after the founder of the business, Harvey S. Firestone. Firestone is, to this day, a very well-known brand, and that may be partly due to the friendship between Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford which resulted in Firestone tyres being factory fitted to early Ford motor cars. Firestone is also credited with inventing non-skid tread designs, a feature that is used in all road-going tyres to this day.
