EV and Hybrid Tyres

The demand for EV and Hybrid cars is becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to see why. They’re designed to be more fuel efficient and far quieter than a traditional petrol or diesel car. What a lot of drivers don’t realise, though, is that your tyres have a major effect on this. Fit the wrong tyres and you’ll lose some of that efficiency you switched for in the first place. That’s where EV and Hybrid tyres come in. They’re specially designed to keep your car running efficiently, saving your wallet and the planet at the same time, while cutting down the noise pollution that comes from the road.

What are EV and Hybrid Tyres?

At first glance, an EV or hybrid tyre might look like any other, but there is actually a lot more going on than meets the eye. Electric and hybrid vehicles produce high torque, accelerating from a stop much more rapidly than traditionally powered vehicles. Regular petrol or diesel cars take longer to start moving as the engine revs and slowly builds power, which resuts in lower levels of torque. As EVs have instant power and can move off quicker, they put more strain on the tyres. 

So, in short, to help reduce how quickly tyres wear out under this additional strain, EV and Hybrid tyres are designed to be tougher and heavier, with sidewalls that absorb some of the additional strain they are put under. Ultimately meaning better range from your full battery of electrons!

Rolling Resistance 

Another thing EV and hybrid tyres are designed to tackle is rolling resistance. Rolling resistance is simply the effort it takes to keep the tyre rolling along the road. The lower the resistance, the less energy used to keep going, which in terms of EVs means how many miles it can travel before the next charge is needed. 

EV tyres are made with special compounds and tread designs that reduce this drag without sacrificing braking performance or stopping distance, helping the battery go further. However, this is a very complicated balancing act in the tyre industry: a tyre needs low rolling resistance to be efficient, but it still needs plenty of grip to accelerate quickly and, importantly, stop safely. EV and hybrid tyres are engineered to manage both at once, keeping the car efficient without giving up traction needed for confident take-offs and braking.

How much noise do EV and Hybrid tyres make?

Most people notice how loud tyres can actually be when switching from a regular car to one without loud engine noise. To keep things quiet, manufacturers put a lot of thought into how EV tyres are made. They’ll add acoustic foam inside the tyre, change the tread pattern, and adjust the way the tyre is built... in short it's much more than an added bit of foam. 

Do I need special tyres for my EV or Hybrid?

Firstly, it’s important to remember that it isn’t illegal for EV and Hybrid cars to have regular tyres fitted. However, due to the reduction of noise, the fuel efficiency and the decreased wear that they provide, many drivers choose to use EV and Hybrid tyres. It is also important to know that EV tyres can be more expensive than regular tyres, but because they last longer, they may work out cheaper in the long run.
